Mission & Vision
Our action team mission is to support a just and local food systems that build equity in our community. We envision a strong community with vibrant farms, well-nourished people, a thriving food economy, and responsible land stewardship.
Our Work
Our work is currently centered around the Blue Ridge Hunger Action Coalition’s Cville Feeding 500 program, information sharing around public benefits, and the collective growth of community free fridges.
Cville Feeding 500
Cville Feeding 500 is a food distribution and nutrition education program that is being piloted through the fiscal sponsorship of Bread & Roses, in collaborative partnership with Blue Ridge Hunger Action Coalition, Food Not Bombs, Free Little Fridges, Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, and the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE). The program has the intention to feed our community with gleaned produce from local farmers and producers, shared commercial kitchen space, job skills and food trainings, and providing desirable nutritious ready-made meals for underserved community members. We put this in practice by involving community members in the recipe selection, preparation, and distribution of meals. Public Benefits
Check in with community members and organizations at our regular meetings to hear updates around public benefits like SNAP, WIC, TANF. We’ll also hear from folks about community impact and what’s going on at the ground level in our community food systems. Community Fridges
Charlottesville has a small but growing number of community fridges, and as we look at our neighborhoods and rural communities, there is interest and need for 3rd spaces and re-distribution points for food.
